Mental health problems and mental disorders are highly prevalent conditions in Hong Kong.

Our postgraduate programme is designed to provide medical practitioners and health care professionals with the fundamental skills, knowledge and competence in the care of common psychological problems in clinical practice.

Department of Psychiarty

 

The Department of Psychiatry of the Chinese University of Hong Kong was set up in 1981. Over the years, our department has become a research-intensive unit that

  • provides a collaborative infrastructure, both locally and internationally, to support our growing portfolio of studies on diverse research themes of high public health significance
  • supports young researchers, junior faculty and postgraduate
  • fosters psychologically sensitive medical professionals through undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Objectives

 

 Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health

  • Understand the core scientific basis for common mental health problems and disorders
  • Appreciate complex interactions between biological, cultural, psychological and social determinants of major mental health problems and disorders
  • Appreciate the operation, characteristics and significance of multidisciplinary services
  • Appreciate the principles of multi-dimensional approach for the management of mental health problems and disorders
  • Assume basic psychotherapeutic techniques in the management of common mental health problems in the community

Master of Science in Mental Health

  • Enhance clinical skills in the assessment and management of common mental health problems and disorders with own professional and service settings
  • Understand the principles of basic research methodology, with special emphasis on psychiatric and behavioral research
  • Be able to critically appraise scientific work in related fields
  • Have an advanced knowledge of mental health care in own professional roles
  • Gain experience in carrying out mental health research
